The IRS is committed to helping you get your Economic Impact Payment as soon as possible. The payments, also referred to by some as stimulus payments, are automatic for most taxpayers. No further action is needed by taxpayers who filed tax returns in 2018 and 2019 and most seniors and retirees.

On its website, the IRS has said that it will send letters to economic impact payment recipients about the payment within 15 days after the payments are made.

Background. In a March 30, 2020 Information Release, the IRS provided details on the distribution of economic impact payments that are part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act, PL 116-136, 3/27/2020). In the Information Release, the IRS stated that economic impact payments would be distributed automatically, with no action required for most people. (IR 2020-61, 3/30/2020) See, IRS releases details on receiving coronavirus economic impact payments (04/01/2020).

Watch for IRS letter. On its website, the IRS says that, for security reasons, it also plans to mail a letter about the economic impact payment to a recipient's last known address within 15 days after the payment is paid. The letter will provide information on how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment. If taxpayers are unsure if they are receiving a legitimate letter, the IRS urges them to visit IRS.gov first to protect against scam artists.
